Donââ¬â¢t Be Alarmed For most people setting an alarm clock is crucial. Being able to stay up late and then be up on time is what saves many people from being fired from their jobs. However, many individuals are unaware of the health factors that are affiliated with the clock. Todayââ¬â¢s society has developed a set of rules that neglect sleep. People believe that it is ok to wake up to alarms, and sleep less and do more work (Kalb). Yet, these individuals not only hurt their sleep, but their overall well-beings. Even though it helps wake one up on time, the alarm clock can cause individuals to have health problems. One unnoticed malefactor in the worldââ¬â¢s obesity epidemic may be the alarm clock, according to Till Roenneberg, a professor at the University of Munichââ¬â¢s Institute of Medical Psychology. He studies ââ¬Å"social jet lagâ⬠from individuals on airplanes. ââ¬Å"Social jet lag is the chronic clash between what our bodies need [more sleep] and what our lives demand [being on time]â⬠(Kalb). In a study, Roenneberg and colleagues examined the sleep habits of more than 65,000 adults. Two-thirds of them suffered from social jet lag, experiencing at least a one-hour inequality between how long they slept on workdays and weekends (Kalb). For every hour that social jet lag augmented, one increased his chances of being overweight by thirty three percent (Kalb).
